Mobik’s baby swimming philosophy

We advocate the middle mean in our approach to infant swimming. We teach a conservative method which objective is to introduce water to babies while holding them in water in various positions, but always with their heads above the water level. This method prevents babies from getting their heads below the surface in all situations. This principle is not observed in most Slovak aqua baby clubs.

We are against extreme methods

Opposite to the above method, there is another spectrum which uses the so-called method of ‘child survival’ also known as the Help system. This method teaches the life-saving manoeuvre of babies rolling their bodies in water from their tummies to their backs in order to float on the surface until help arrives to them in case of emergency. This method is practised in America and represents a baby ‘survival drill’. In other words, if your baby falls into a pool, it can learn to stay on its back or to kick and get towards the edge of the pool. This method, however, can be difficult for parents who have to watch their baby crying and obviously being in distress while performing this exercise..

We do not practise this extreme method! Parents having own pools in their houses are particularly inclined to using this method. We fully understand the sense of responsibility parents have in relation to their pools and children. It is particularly this combination that can be hazardous. Accidents can happen anytime or simply happen out of the blue. You turn your head away for a second, look out of the window and meanwhile anything can happen to your child. But, there must be a ‘middle mean’ to follow. So, what does it lie in? There are doubtlessly fewer home indoor swimming pools in Slovakia, but there are plenty of beautiful and crystal-clear outdoor ones.

 We choose the ‘golden mean’ – we create stimulating conditions for children, so that they dive themselves when the right time comes...

That is the reason why we have chosen the ‘golden mean’ in our teaching. We lead children in a way that it is them who must gain a feeling of readiness to dive or go underwater. We try to achieve this in a funny way by creating stimulating conditions with respect and regard to individuality and individual pace of every single child. Our swimming courses start with gradual and easy introductory exercises. First of all, babies enjoy doing exercises with their heads above water. Water gently sprinkles their heads, while we are singing songs, and all this fun takes place in a ‘wet’ and relaxed environment. Later, we gradually add other stimuli and repeat the already familiar exercises when mums blow bubbles into the water or dive together with their babies later on. Other exercises, for example, include those of babies floating on the water surface on their backs with ears underwater. At the beginning, the parent supports and holds the baby in this position and slowly lets him/her do it on its own. The key to the success of this exercise is in its adaptation to the needs of each child and its individual pace. If the baby is not feeling comfortable with this exercise, we simply change it to other one. We experiment with how different children can adapt to different exercises. We have found out that repetition is the mother of wisdom.

All children get adapted to water

But why do we do this? Why is it good for babies to learn to ‘feel’ the water, getting familiar with it, getting used to water being sprayed into their face or gaining underwater experience? We have noticed that the aforementioned facts lead to the following conclusions. We have experience with infants and children up to six years of age. Those children, who took some course in baby swimming, has got familiar with a pool in their early age (i.e. toddler age) or are in regular contact with water, feel in water more comfortably and naturally and have by far more advanced swimming skills at an early age.

We also have experience with children who had completed courses in other baby swimming clubs and been taught the so-called ‘signal submerging’. A higher percentage of these children have water-associated problems later in life.

We respect individuality of children – the goal of our courses is not getting away with a photo of your child swimming underwater

Children approximately up to the age of 1 year are unable to express verbally what they like or not. It is up to us, parents, to learn to understand the non-verbal speech of our children. We should observe our children and let them feel that they can fully rely on us. To make them feel that it is not our primary priority just to have an underwater photo of them taken.

Here in Mobik children’s safety, health and well-being is our primary concern. Our reward is their smile!

In conclusion, I would like to remind you that we, parents, are responsible for our children at least until they are 4 years old if there is water around. It is highly necessary not to lose your child out of sight. Neither any physical barrier, nor any swimming abilities can replace the active supervision of an adult person. If the child gets out of your sight, always check the water first without delay.

We should bear in mind that water is a powerful element. Teach your children to love it, but at the same time to respect it...
